My Instant Pot Black Beans Exist Mostly Because I’m Impatient

A white bowl of no soak black beans cooked to perfection

I have only ever truly come to love the taste of good black beans after eating at a very popular restaurant in South Florida called Pollo Tropical. Now, I have opened and seasoned with great passion many cans of beans, and they NEVER taste as good as just making them from dried. And thats not just the humble black bean. Being a proud Jamaican I can say this about many beans.

Even the beans in Jamaican Rice and Peas tastes better when you start with a bag of dried beans versus a can. The problem is, I’m not the person to think of leavig my bag of beans out soaking overnight. Usually, I dont realize I want my fix of black beans and rice until I’m standing in the kitchen ready to make it. I get the best Black beans When I started using my instant pot to cut out the overnight soaking step. Doing this, I still get tender, flavorful black beans in one pot. I season them with adobo, thyme, smoked paprika, and a touch of onion and garlic — simple, bold, and perfect.

And honestly? These Instant Pot black beans taste even better the next day.

Try pairing them with my Beer Glazed BBQ Chicken, Slices of Buttery Herb Roasted Chicken, or a simple serving of white rice for a quick weeknight dinner.

How to Make No Soak Instant Pot Black Beans

Time needed: 1 hour and 15 minutes

When it comes to no soak black beans in the Instant Pot, the magic is all in the flavor base.

  1. Saute Aromatics

Start by sautéing your onions and garlic right in the pot — this is your flavor foundation. Once the aromatics are fragrant, stir in smoked paprika, adobo seasoning, thyme, and cumin. Blooming the spices helps release their oils and intensify flavor.

  2. Add the Beans; Flavor the Broth

Next, add your rinsed dried beans and 3 cups of broth, or water. Here’s my favorite tip: taste the bean broth (or water) before sealing the lid. If you’re using water, start with 1 teaspoon of salt; if you’re using broth, use ½ to 1 teaspoon depending on saltiness. The liquid should taste like a light soup — that’s how you know the beans will come out flavorful.

  3. Cook the Beans

Seal the lid and cook on High Pressure for 55 minutes, then let it naturally release for 15 minutes. When you open the lid, stir, taste, and adjust the seasoning. If you like creamier beans, mash a few with your spoon and simmer for 3–5 minutes on Sauté.

  4. Enjoy

That’s it — perfectly cooked easy no soak black beans every time.

How To Store and Reheat Easy No Soak Black Beans

Store cooled beans in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. The flavor deepens over time, so day two or three is actually the best!

To reheat, warm gently on the stove with a splash of water or broth to loosen the texture. These easy no soak black beans also freeze beautifully — just cool completely, portion into freezer bags, and label.

FAQ: Instant Pot Black Beans

Do I need to soak black beans before cooking them in the Instant Pot?

Nope! That’s the beauty of this recipe — it’s a no soak black bean recipe. The Instant Pot pressure cooks them to perfection in 35 minutes.

Can I double this recipe?

Yes, but don’t fill your Instant Pot past the halfway line. Add an extra ½ cup of liquid to ensure proper pressure building.

Can I use canned beans instead?

You can, but it’s not the same. Canned beans lack the depth of flavor that comes from pressure cooking dry beans with aromatics and adobo.

What can I substitute for adobo seasoning?

Use a mix of garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, cumin, and a pinch of oregano. But honestly, adobo gives these beans their signature taste.

Can I make these black beans vegetarian or vegan?

Absolutely — just use vegetable broth or water instead of chicken broth.

What’s the best way to make them creamier?

Mash a few beans with the back of your spoon and simmer briefly on Sauté.

There’s something powerful about a humble pot of beans. When life feels busy and chaotic, the Instant Pot gives me one less thing to worry about — it’s comfort food, simplified. These easy no soak black beans are rich, filling, and endlessly versatile.

And when you realize how easy they are, you’ll wonder why you ever bought canned beans. Cooking beans might seem simple, but it’s also soulful. Every pot tells a story — and this one’s all about warmth, time-saving comfort, and flavor that lingers.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups dried black beans, rinsed and picked over

  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter

  • 2 tsp onion powder

  • 2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp smoked paprika

  • ½ tsp ground cumin

  • 2 tsp adobo seasoning

  • tsp dried thyme or 1 sprig fresh thyme

  • 2 bay leaf

  • 4 cups chicken broth

  • Salt to taste

  • 1 scallion, chopped (optional for Caribbean flair)

Directions

  • Set the Instant Pot to Sauté and add the olive oil or butter.
  • Stir in the onion powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, ground cumin, adobo seasoning, thyme, and bay leaf, allowing the spices to bloom for about 30 seconds.
  • Add the rinsed black beans and pour in the broth. Stir well and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot.
  • Taste the cooking liquid before sealing. It should taste lightly salty and flavorful like a mild soup. Adjust the salt as needed.
  • Seal the lid and set the Instant Pot to Pressure Cook (High) for 55 minutes
  • When the timer finishes, allow the pressure to release naturally for 15 minutes, then carefully perform a quick release for any remaining pressure.
  • Open the lid, stir the beans, and taste. Adjust seasoning as needed with more adobo or salt. For a creamier texture, mash a few beans against the side of the pot and simmer on Sauté for 3–5 minutes before serving.
